1950′s furniture is commonly referred to as Scandinavian contemporary furniture or retro furniture and is largely made using natural wood. This style of furniture falls under the category of vintage furniture. It is simple, utilitarian and functional, using straight lines with no ornaments. Today, lovers of this style of furniture have a large selection of both indoor and outdoor furniture made using the 1950′s design concepts.
Furniture at that time was not regards as a status symbol and more focus was placed on its utility rather than beauty and comfort. However, Comfort started to grow in popularity and increased importance and this lead to furniture upholstery in the 1950′s and 60′s, which has continued to date.
1950′s furniture tends to be very solid and is normally made from strong hard woods like black walnut, hickory, mahogany, elm, aple, oak, and teak. Other materials like steel are also used to make this furniture. Oil varnish or wax can be used to polish the furniture to keep it looking shiny and new. This will also protect against dust and moisture. It is important to keep furniture shielded from direct sunlight and water. Sunlight will cause yellowing of the wood while water will cause it to shrink, affecting the joinery and finish.
Owing to its simple and functional design of the furniture, it easily blends into any room without dominating the room. This allows other elements of a room’s decor to take center stage. 1950′s furniture will therefore easily blend with other intricate and ornamental styles of furniture and decor. It is readily available online, from vintage furniture shops and auctions.
1950′s furniture will cost you some amount to acquire owing to the design and type of wood used but will give your home a contemporary look and will serve you for many years without much need for repairs and replacement.

This is the reason this kind of desk was ubiquitous in houses and offices. It is said that this desk was created in the 19th century by Abner Cutler, who owns Cutler Desk Company. He made a unique piece by adding a flexible tambour to an ordinary desk, just so he could cover the desk and all items in it when he was not using it.
